So, you can always tell when the holidays are approaching if you watch commercials (aka advertisements for cars, jewelry, and electronic devices). Now, I love the holiday season (not so much the cold), so I'm not bashing that at all...just to be clear. :)
Today, I watched a commercial about how a one stop holiday shopping trip for a family would prevent all the headache (biting, fighting, etc.) of the holiday season. I'm sorry...why do people bite and fight anyways during the holiday season? Oh...because gifts are clearly the most important thing, right? And clearly people don't control their own actions, right? Instead, they are controlled by something (anything) else.
I resent that. I think retail and the like created the whole problem in the first place, so why are they so wonderful for fixing the problem?
Isn't this something wrong with our society? Isn't the holiday season supposed to be about celebrating the blessings in life (salvation, family, health, etc.)?
Gifts are an expression of love, but not the only one. Maybe if people would focus their attention on thanking God for giving His only son to us (which we so do not deserve) and spending time with our families and friends (which we so often take for granted) we wouldn't need some advertisement for some gift to make it through the season.
C'mon, people...
it is getting worse and worse too. i love giving gifts, so i certainly don't want to knock on that, but kids are so gift-focused that it can take a lot of the fun out of giving them! i hate the sense of entitlement kids have now, like they aren't grateful anymore for the gifts because they have just come to expect them! i definitely think we have pulled away from the meaning of the christmas season, whether you are religious or not, it was never supposed to be retail-focused. if you're not religious i think it should still at least be about spending time with family and appreciating your blessings.
